Summer of 2009

by Mike Brunacini

about

I graduated in 2009. I didn’t know it at the time, but that summer was the end of an era for me. I was lucky enough to not need a job that summer. I had no obligations, no responsibilities. This song is about that brief period in time where I was truly free. It’s about staying up all night and waking up whenever I felt like it, exploring abandoned private property and running from the authorities, and remembering it all and longing to be back. The looming shadow of adulthood creeping closer with each sunset until it eventually overtook the sky.

lyrics

It's something I cannot explain to you because
it's something I cannot obtain no matter how
hard I try to quantify it
drive myself insane
And each time I try to find myself
I end up back again

I can feel the sunshine
what a time to be alive
in the summer of 2009
we had it all for the last time

Remember staying up all night
communion by the firelight
nothing to do, out past curfew
Running from the cops
and each time we thought they pinned us down
we'd come out on top

I can feel the sunshine
what a time to be alive
in the summer of 2009
we had it all for one last
summer

2009
the lazy days would end
with sunsets on the beach
2009
I almost feel it now
but it's just out of reach
2009
the crimson red, the death knell
fated summer's end
2009
all summers end

I can feel the sunshine
what a time to be alive
in the summer of 2009
we had it all for one last summer
we had it all for one last summer
the summer of 2009

Mike Brunacini is an American songwriter hell-bent on crafting wistful melodic pop with retro sensibilities. His melancholic lyrics disarm with their quiet introspection while his lush, cinematic string and horn arrangements transport the listener to sepia toned landscapes. ... more
