It's always tempting to write a song with a space theme. Stars are just something I'm drawn to. I guess "Lightyears" is about feeling connected to someone across time and space. There have been so many people who have come and gone, and they felt the same things we feel, saw the same stars that we see. In a world that’s constantly changing, the stars seem to provide a sort of commonality across time. Even at a smaller scale, your favorite city may now look incredibly different to someone who lived there 50 years ago… but the position of the stars hasn’t appeared to change. I feel a sort of wistful homesickness when I look up at the night sky… like there is something I’m supposed to remember, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s both comforting and melancholic. That’s the essence of what I was trying to capture in the song.
