DreamState

by Mike Brunacini

/
1.
Jonah: When I was young I had this dream I can’t believe how real it seemed Twas in these woods I lost a friend It may seem childish, but sometimes My memories blend Perhaps out here I’ll see him again A ghost-like vision caught between Between here and then But it’s been so long, the story is starting to fade from memory I’ll try to recall before it’s too late what happened to me in a DreamState
2.
Jonah: The sun shining down on Asbury Forest a cool breeze blew beneath the trees A restless young pair of childhood explorers set out to find things left unseen Orion went in, in search of adventure I Jonah, a daily life escape We walked off the path and followed the creek bed until a wide river took shape We were trying to go and explore places we’d never been There was always something new to find Although it’s still the same old forest as before I remember seeing so much more The river was deep so we climbed up the rock face to find another way around We formed our own path in the denser part of the forest but light, the canopy had drowned We were trying to go and explore places we’d never been There was always something new to find Although it’s still the same old forest as before I remember seeing so much more
3.
Sundown 03:41
Orion: The shadows growing long I really should be going But I keep pressing on Something in me knowing The trees take on new life the moon looks down to find me his efforts are in vain his light is drowned by their sea The sun slips down the hill the colors splash and stars fill the sky Dark evening shroud cast like a cloud press on in vain Nightwalker reigns this domain
4.
Fireflies 02:50
Orion: We’re too far in to look back now but it’s too dark to continue Should we stay until sunrise? What’s the light catching my eyes? Little stars all around me weaving patterns through dense trees Flashing on and off through the night I can see a path by their light Fireflies form parallel lines Lighting a path into the night Following them I’ll be alright Though I can’t see where we’re going I just believe without knowing They are leading us out of here Listen Jonah, there’s nothing to fear Fireflies form parallel lines Lighting a path into the night Following them we’ll be alright It’s alright despite the night, the fireflies are glowing bright We’ll be alright
5.
Gate 04:08
Jonah: Through the brush and through the trees the fireflies led me to see and now I stand before a gate This rusted gate, now nothing more than a timeless metaphor a certain kind of lock and key But then, the gate I looked up to appeared to be completely new and it stretched far beyond my sight I wonder what this wall concealed I search an entrance to reveal what is on the other side I spy an entrance and I see there’s a guard who’s eyeing me and he turns to me to say Guard: Go away. Can’t you see? This has been a great mistake it seems Beyond this gate is a world that you have only seen in your dreams I can’t let you through What will happen if I do? Long ago a man came in bringing with him vice and sin Driven mad by greed and hate Constantine peeled back our gate With that he had sealed your fate It’s too late
6.
Constantine 02:59
Guard: There once was a time you already forgot You were allowed back here, but now you’re not This was your world and he took it from you When he came crashing through Constantine, dressed in black, peels the iron gate back and releases the flood Knowledge comes pouring through casts shadows on the ground memories forgotten of this world unbound The darkness of reality and the darkness of the lies repelled by imagination and by the light of the fireflies
7.
I. Undertow Jonah: What did the gatekeeper mean? I need to know. A stunning dreamland tableaux? Could I go underneath? It’s too high, too strong and the guard don’t think I belong A small trapdoor in the grass, etchings on wood not to be understood A ladder built in the side, make my way down until my feet touch the ground Darkness profound. Feeling around Cold earth surrounds A wooden door in the soil forming a wall We walk through it and fall Suddenly I’m submerged, gasping for air in a chamber lit by green flares Deeper I’m pulled the undertow drags us below II. Riverflow Jonah: I fell out of the air I land in a field somewhere Above me the moonlight gleams glowing a bluish-green And now before my eyes a river flows in the sky the source of unearthly light I don’t believe my sight The twilight blue and neon green light the ground below enough for us to see Orion, follow me Follow the riverflow see where the story goes Over the course of time transforms into mist, so fine The twilight blue and neon green light the ground below enough for us to see Orion, follow me III. Lost in the Mist Jonah: Lost in the mist and I can’t seem to find a way out of this and now I can’t even follow the stream that had once run so strange above me Running in circles in the mist. Do I even exist? Will this nightmare persist? Will I find a way out of this abyss? IV. Luna Moth Jonah: There’s something glowing in the mist it’s moving in the distance There! In the air I run to get a closer look, but what I see has seen me too Can’t be true! A pair of eyes hung there in the sky they’re attached by something Could it be wings? And in between the tail of the wings forms a mouth that can speak though its voice is weak Luna Moth: I know it’s so hard to believe, but I wouldn’t deceive you No! Don’t go! If you decide to follow me I will lead you out of here. Don’t fear. Jonah: Orion knew, too good to be true But where he saw doubt I saw a way out But I was wrong, we’d been led astray and the Luna Moth laughed as it flew away. V. Complete Darkness Jonah: As complete darkness surrounds me this is my next test The Luna Moth has left me now to sort through this mess I’ve got to get out, but I can’t see a thing Wind whipping around me touching my skin stings What should I do? I need to decide I call to Orion, he’s not by my side He’s out there… In the darkness, I’ve got to get out I need to face my fears Stumbling down an unknown path eyes filled with angry tears Through the brush and through the trees using my hands and ears to see Moving forward, I’m back again There doesn’t seem to be an end VI. Undertow Reprise (Instrumental)
8.
Jonah: Losing hope, all my dreams have left me now I’m struggling all alone here the Luna Moth has betrayed And now it seems I’ve lost Orion, but I’m so far gone, who am I to find him? Is this real? Am I insane? Will I ever see home again? I hold my heart in fear I can’t believe I’m here in the distance, what is that? A light! So I run towards it without a doubt that this could be my only way out the light is nearer, I see it clearer I must’ve lost my mind A streetlamp stands alone Rays of light now show… How could I be standing here now? I don’t know A paved road underneath my feet I turn back to read the sign I’m standing right back where we started, but I left part of me behind
9.
Jonah: I went back there the next day and I saw a rusted gate, ruins strewn behind and inside a gazebo, I swear I saw him sitting there He looked up and he saw me his hollow eyes revealing a sadness deep inside That’s the last time I saw him. It’s been such a long, long time I almost forgot I had left him there in the darkness and despair I made it out alive, but did he survive? Was he ever there at all? Was it all in my mind? Maybe he left me behind? Sometimes I go back late at night hoping to see the fireflies are lighting up waiting to lead me right back to the sacred gate I’ve been looking for I trade places with Orion, just like before I can’t shake how real it seemed but it must have been a childhood dream
10.
Interlude 02:24
Interlude (Instrumental)
11.
Orion: I’m beginning to feel that I’ve walked into a dream and it doesn’t belong to me So many faces and places I’ve seen, but it doesn’t belong to me So I go walking around thinking I’m bound to find out whose dream I have been trapped within. Tightly seamed. Awake in an unconscious stream Trapped in a dream On top of a sand dune I stare out at the trees as they are consumed by a sea The sea turns to glass, waves of color underneath forming a giant TV screen And I see someone walking around thinking I’m bound to find out whose dream I have been trapped within, but it’s me What if it’s only me and I’m trapped in my own dream? (My own dream, not what it seems) But what if it’s not? What happens when they wake up? (Will I persist? Do I exist?) So I go walking around thinking I’m bound to find out whose dream I have been trapped within. Tightly seamed. Awake in an unconscious stream Trapped in a dream
12.
Luna Moth: Orion, I am the Luna Moth I will take you away You’ll meet him today Orion: I don’t know what you are talking about Luna Moth: It’s time to convene to meet Constantine Orion: A sudden flash of light reveals my return to the forest, now the midday sun burns The moth has disappeared, but I have arrived to an old gate, crumbling buildings behind Just inside a shattered window ahead a tall, dark figure stands and I’m filled with dread Two angry white-hot dots, its eyes lock on mine as he begins to speak, his voice seems to block the sunshine
13.
Confined 03:43
Constantine: Orion, you have come so far, but not so far as to remember who you are What was once your kingdom now becomes your cell and maybe it is just as well Look around where you now stand You dreamed this up, but now a line’s drawn in the sand Jonah took your place outside, beyond the gate and you took his and sealed your fate And now you’re confined trapped deep within Jonah’s mind You might as well be dead, inside his head you are defenseless it’s senseless your sentence is relentless And now you’re confined trapped deep within Jonah’s mind Memories fade faster every day and as he forgets, you decay
14.
Orion: Beyond the trees and further still I don’t quite understand, but maybe you will Your eyes aren’t right, for it’s clear and bright and yet your gazing eyes see through me That old guard was right. He set you free, then Constantine replaced you with me But all that’s been done has been done before and all that changes are the faces You had to grow up, it was time but if you return you will find that I am still here, if you should wish to return to childhood After a while and unknown regret will build inside as you forget But if you try you can help me through and I just need you to remember me remember you
15.
I. Edge of the Woods Orion: I’ve got to run as fast as I can I’ve got to get out of here before it’s too late The street outside the forest is my best bet I can’t be here when he forgets The sun is sinking in the sky I know I’ll make it if I try Through the brush and through the trees the streetlamp beckons me to leave I’ve gotta make it to the edge of the woods it’s the only way out I’ve gotta make it to the edge of the woods before time runs out II. Hazy Silver Beams Orion: The sun sets in the western sky the vivid colors dance and put me in a trance They’re flashing all different hues The colors fade into an aura of blue as darkness falls upon these sacred halls of timber, grass, dirt, and dew My chances fading now I’ve got to soldier on somehow I cannot go astray or I will fade away The stars turn on their lights the moonlight gleams its hazy silver beams bring a trail into view As I approach the crescent satellite it grows in length and height it’s close than I ever knew I reach my arm up high pull the moon out of the sky a trail of light remains up there I draw a door into the air and as I walk inside I fall into a sea of nothingness far and wide III. Void Orion: There is nothing all around me Can’t even hear the sound of my breath or heartbeat thumping might as well start the countdown I’m just an empty vessel now floating through a void an expired soul who’s bound to be repurposed or destroyed I drift off into sleep devoid of any senses in this place I wake up on the ground a streetlamp shining down upon my face IV. Last Light (Instrumental) V. Streetlamp in the Dark Unknown Narrator: He follows the streetlamp’s light out of the void but the darkness is creeping in With each attempt to pass the post it never leaves his side As Orion blinks his eyes he meets his demise. Orion fades into the blackness.
