Enough to Go Around

about

Enough to Go Around is about all the independently owned “mom and pop” corner stores that once thrived in every neighborhood. No matter where they lived, people would be within walking distance of a store selling fresh, local food. The stores fed the people, the people spent money at the store, and the food was sourced from local farmers.

In the song, I imagine a villainous businessman who comes into town and proposes a big new “convenient” supermarket with “unbeatable” prices. This new modern store puts the “mom and pop” shops out of business and it isn’t long before the neighborhood realizes the mistake they’ve made. Sure, the prices are lower, but that money isn’t staying in the community. It’s being siphoned to corporate offices and investors hundreds of miles away. The food isn’t coming from the local farmers, it’s coming from an industrial factory farm. And you can’t walk around the block to get good food, which leads to food deserts and inequality.

I grew up after most of my local corner stores were already gone. I recently discovered an old photo of the house I currently live in and sure enough, there’s a corner store right next door. It would’ve been really nice to walk next door for groceries and support my neighbor’s store. I can’t help but feel like we were cheated out of something.

lyrics

On the Southern end of Eleventh Street
Was a corner store named "Albright's"
And the neighborhood walked to get their groceries
And they had enough to go around

See, we all went to Albright's
Who were mostly stocked by Sanderson's Farm
But the bigger stores came and we could not compete
So we had to shut the small stores down

They shut us down
And sourced their goods from out of town

The prices they can't be beat
Remember convenience is everything
Just bypass Eleventh Street
Imagine the revenue this will bring
That's how they made it sound
But there's not enough to go around

They never cared and never will
Hindsight is 20/20
When they discover they don't need us
They leave us all with nothing

There's no way we can compete
Remember convenience is everything
It's not just Eleventh Street
Imagine the revenue this will bring
That's how they made it sound
But there's not enough to go around
