Nothing Happens for a Reason

about

This is one of those “take a saying and flip it on its head” songs. I honestly don’t think there’s a reason for anything. I started the song as a rebuttal to people who say “everything happens for a reason” after a tragic event. REALLY?! There’s a reason? I’d love to hear it!

But the song kind of morphed into a relationship song, because that’s a lot more approachable to a listener than a song about dumb things people say at funerals.

In this new context, the song is about an ex trying to make you feel better, but saying "everything happens for a reason" and "plenty of fish in the sea" is only making things worse. You'd rather they just tell you the harsh truth and get it over with.

lyrics

I almost picture
light as air
the last thing you said
when I thought you cared

the weight of words
a cruel cliche
I'd say goodbye
but you left yesterday

I thought that I could trust you
to tell it to my face
it's plain to see
that nothing happens for a reason
don't kid yourself
don't lie to me

I know the road to hell is paved
with intentions pure as the lies we crave
they say the truth will set me free
so rip my heart out and leave me to bleed

I thought that I could trust you
to tell it to my face
it's plain to see
that nothing happens for a reason
don't kid yourself
don't lie to me

'cause maybe in time our wounds heal
I guess it doesn't matter
what you made me feel

I thought that I could trust you
to tell it to my face
it's plain to see
that nothing happens for a reason
don't kid yourself
don't lie to me

Mike Brunacini is an American songwriter hell-bent on crafting wistful melodic pop with retro sensibilities. His melancholic lyrics disarm with their quiet introspection while his lush, cinematic string and horn arrangements transport the listener to sepia toned landscapes. ... more
