Christmas Magic

In writing my first Christmas song, I wanted to evoke the feeling of the many Christmas standards. I decided to go with the jazz approach, with some Vince Guaraldi inspiration peppered in here or there. Rob Hewitt (of Colorless and Three Philosophers) plays the drums!

Lyrically, I was hoping to convey the loneliness a lot of people feel around this time of year. I'm not sure why, but all of my favorite Christmas songs have an understated sadness to them. "Perhaps I never understood about Christmas."

I wanted to capture that sadness both lyrically and musically. I hope I did a good job.

The snow is falling and the houses are decked with lights
That magic feeling almost hits me tonight
Remember Christmas Eve, oh you couldn’t be contained
Claymation Santa Clauses danced in your brain

I blink my eyes and you’ve grown up and you’ve moved away
That magic feeling won’t convince you to stay
or even visit, you’re aware it has been some time
you have your own life and you’ve left me behind

Christmas music plays wherever I go
and I’m reminded every soft crunch of snow
frosted windows with a warm glow inside
life could be like that, oh lord knows I’ve tried

I put the tree up and strung the lights
I even got you a present
I hoped you would show,
but this isn’t a movie and magic isn’t real
